BARR/RJE is a software module of the Barr Enterprise Print Server that allows you to send and receive files to and from multiple IBM mainframes via IP or SNA. Applications for BARR/RJE include integration of mainframe and open systems networks and enterprise-wide print and output management. BARR/RJE communicates with the mainframe by emulating an IBM 3770, a device that provides batch transmissions via IP or SNA connections to mainframe job entry systems.

IP via the Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP) link
DLSw via connections to your mainframe through special routers that encapsulate SNA protocols within a TCP/IP packet

SDLC connections (at up to 2.048 Mbps) with V.35, X.21, RS530, RS449, or V.24/RS232 cable
SNA gateways such as Microsoft HIS, Microsoft SNA Server, or Microsoft SNA Workstation. The SNA gateway connects to the mainframe through DLC, SDLC, or CHANNEL (Bus & Tag or ESCON). BARR/NJE connects to the SNA gateway via TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, or NetBEUI protocols.

You must be a member of the local Administrators group to operate the RJE Configuration Utility. If you are assigned the Configure - RJE user access right on the computer to which you are trying to connect, but are not a member of the Administrators group, the RJE Configuration Utility will operate in read-only mode.
Use the RJE Configuration Utility to define, import, and export RJE connections. When you add or modify a connection, the RJE Configuration Utility tabs display with connection-specific information. The RJE Configuration Utility consists of an opening screen and six configuration tabs:
RJE Description tab – Specifies RJE system parameters for the BARR/RJE software and the host RJE system. Produces sample Remote definition and Logmode table entry statements for the host programmers.
Communication Link tab – Specifies the BARR/RJE communication protocol and physical attachment between the host system and remote computer. Produces sample communication link parameter statements (NCP and Physical Unit) for the host programmers.
Device Control tab – Specifies features that affect output files received on the source devices.
Forms tab – Specifies a form for an RJE print stream (PR1 to PR7). Forms enable files received on the print stream to print in the correct format.
Commands tab – Assigns commands you use most frequently from the Barr software to specific command buttons.
Connection Control tab – Specifies startup and restart options.
To access RJE Console, you must be assigned the RJE Console user access right.
BARR/RJE's primary purpose is to transfer files between the computer and a host computer. You can perform most file transfer functions from the RJE Console. RJE Console sends commands from the remote workstation to the host computer. You can use commands to view information about files waiting in print or punch queues, determine the RJE device status, and request that print or punch files be sent to the remote workstation. RJE Console also receives and displays messages from the host computer, which is useful in monitoring BARR/RJE activity. These messages tell you the status of jobs and RJE devices such as printers and punches. RJE Console is especially important for displaying messages when you print special forms, such as invoices and checks.
The RJE Console includes the following features.
Allows the user to send commands to the host and receive messages from the host
Displays record header information from the console view
Selects a remote to which commands and messages will be sent
Allows 40 customizable command buttons
Recalls previous commands
Saves console output to a log file
Connects to multiple RJE hosts
By using the RJE Diagnostics utility, you can monitor communication between the computer and the host computer. If you have trouble operating BARR/RJE and contact Barr Technical Support, a support analyst may request that you run the RJE Diagnostics utility to determine the cause of the problem.
The RJE Diagnostics utility includes the following features.
Displays a communications scope to monitor packets of information being sent to the host computer and received from the host computer
Displays important link statistics for each connection type (802.2 LLC2, HPR/IP, SDLC, or MS/LUA)
Displays bind data
To access RJE Connection Manager, you must be assigned the RJE Connection Manager user access right.
The RJE Connection Manager enables you to access information about RJE connections on network computers available to your local computer. You can choose the computers that contain the RJE connections you want to monitor. Your computer list is saved when you exit the program, and the RJE Connection Manager resumes monitoring your chosen computers' RJE connections when you reopen the program. Because the information is continually updated, you can view the computers' current connection attributes, such as the communication status, link service type, and data flow rate.
The RJE Connection Manager includes the following features.
Connects or disconnects multiple connections
Refreshes all information, such as the connection name, link type, and test mode
Saves the list of computers currently monitored, and saves currently displayed data to a log file
Launches the RJE Console, RJE Configuration Utility, and RJE Diagnostics for your selected connection
